Esensi dan Eksistensi Pelayan HKBP sebagai Pengajar di Era Kecerdasan Buatan

This article examines the essence and existence of HKBP ministers as teachers of faith in the context of artificial intelligence (AI), which can prepare learning materials and respond directly to questions of faith. Here, essence and existence refer to the basis of the calling and its enactment in teaching, rather than to an ontological account of ministers. The central question concerns how the church's teaching responsibility is carried out when congregants obtain religious explanations from AI before engaging with a minister. Using an interpretive theological approach based on literature research, the study examines Konfessi HKBP 1996 alongside scholarship on AI, Christian education, and teaching in the church. The analysis distinguishes AI used to prepare materials that can be reviewed before instruction from AI that generates interactive answers requiring discussion after congregants encounter them. The study proposes four interconnected criteria for teaching, namely doctrinal fidelity, source traceability, dialogical engagement, and faith formation. The first two primarily address the responsibility to preserve sound teaching, while the latter two elaborate the responsibility to teach. Taken together, these criteria connect the accuracy of instructional content with how congregants understand and live out their faith. The findings are a theological synthesis and have not yet been tested through field research in HKBP congregations.
